Premium Efficiency Cooling Program

Sizing Your System

When it comes to your air conditioning system, bigger is not always better. Your A/C system should be custom fitted to your home. Insist that your contractor use a correct sizing calculator before ordering equipment or signing a contract. The most common problem is oversized equipment.

Oversized HVAC units:

  • Operate inefficiently and can be less reliable because of frequent compressor cycling and poor humidity control
  • Can be noisy and are unnecessarily expensive to purchase, install and operate
  • Don't run long enough to dehumidify the air, leaving you and your family feeling cold and clammy

Undersized HVAC units:

  • Have inadequate airflow
  • Are inefficient because they must run continuously to meet the target temperature
  • Often break down sooner because they must run more to meet comfort levels
