Premium Efficiency Cooling Program

Invest in Cool. Reap the Rewards.

Air conditioning is a major part of a company's operating and maintenance budget. An inefficient or poorly maintained system can lead to unexpected breakdowns and increased energy bills. By retiring older air conditioning units and replacing them with premium-efficiency HVAC equipment, your business will run leaner and cleaner.

Air conditioning accounts for 1/3 to 1/2 of the electricity consumed in a typical commercial building. Protect yourself against rising energy costs by investing in premium efficiency equipment now. Upgrade your HVAC system in 2010-12 to take advantage of:

  • Reduced maintenance expenses and operating costs
  • Manufacturer promotions and rebates
  • Limited program discounts available through participating contractors*

The Premium Efficiency Cooling Program is open to eligible commercial customers in the San Diego Gas & Electric® service area. The program supports the maintenance and retirement of air conditioning equipment and the sales of new premium-efficiency packaged rooftop equipment. Participating contractors can assist you in determining whether your equipment qualifies for program discounts, tax credits, and/or seasonal manufacturer promotions.*

Eligible equipment includes packaged rooftop and split-system HVAC units, including air-source heat pumps, gas/electric and electric direct-expansion AC units, up to 63 tons per unit. The program also provides incentives for ductless mini-split and multi-split AC or air-source heat pump units, evaporative coolers, and packaged terminal AC and air-source heat pumps. Equipment must meet program minimum efficiency thresholds and some restrictions apply. See participation agreement, application form and incentive schedule for details.

Premium Tune-up measures include comprehensive tune-ups that incorporate ANSI/ASHRAE/ACCA 180-2008 compliant maintenance and inspection protocols, economizer repair or replacement, refrigerant charge testing, condenser coil and evaporator coil cleaning, suction line insulation replacement and condenser fan coil fin combing.

*Talk to your contractor for details. Discounts are available to eligible customers who install qualifying HVAC units. To qualify, units must be installed in an eligible business in the San Diego Gas & Electric® service area and meet program minimum efficiency requirements. Permit numbers must be submitted where required by local codes and customers must submit a Statement of Energy Performance and W-9 to receive program incentives.
